It’s a Busby Berkeley musical, with death and destruction as the choreography. The downtown neighborhood where Beau lives is defined by violence and madness: People fight in the middle of the street, they threaten to jump off buildings, and dead bodies lie about. It's Aster’s funniest movie yet.īeau is a quintessential Aster protagonist, barely making it in a hellish landscape that’s lovingly detailed by Aster and production designer Fiona Crombie. “Beau Is Afraid,” an enveloping fantasy laced with mommy issues, is about being doomed from birth. His excellent, trauma-filled dramas “ Hereditary” and “ Midsommar” may be packed with the horror of relationships, but it’s the cruel joke underneath that provides their driving force–they are pitch-black comedies about the universal fear of losing free-will, of being screwed from the get-go. The film’s writer/director is Ari Aster, who has always been a funny guy.

These meditations will provoke discussion and broaden our theological understanding while guiding us into a deeper understanding of the faith. Rather, the authors grapple with questions which we continue to struggle with today-questions of faith and grace, sin and salvation, work and worship. These meditations are not simply historical explorations or an exercise in documenting past events. Yet the Reformation is not an era we in the West can simply ignore it is bred in our bones, runs through our veins, and shapes our life together in myriad ways. While some church communities enthusiastically proclaim their Reformation roots, others look askance at particular reformers and seek to distance themselves from the whole of the Reformation. It seems appropriate, given the central place Scripture had for the reformers, that we should follow their lead in looking to the Bible in the context of the life of the church. Along this path, the authors, all faculty at Wycliffe College, engage with biblical passages which were important at that time and remain just as vital today in working out what it means to be a Christian, what it means to be the people of God. About the Book Beginning with the desires of our hearts and ending with the priesthood of all believers, this series of meditations traces a path through some central concerns of the Reformation. Leonard is a brilliant, sheepish sidekick while Dandy's bear friend will melt your heart. However, Dandy isn't the only stand-out character by any means. Naturally Ben and Hattie are over the moon at landing a lion as a best friend because what child wouldn't want a lion as a best friend? Debonair Dandy leaps off the page with flair and panache - a loveable rogue (or he is?) who develops an endearing and rather humorous friendship with two young children. But Dandy is a highway lion on a mission and soon Ben and Hattie are caught up in dangerous adventure whilst trying to avoid a Private Investigator who is determined to sniff out the identity of the highway lion and bring him to justice.įor me, this immediately had the feel of a timeless classic with a larger-than-life character at its centre. Dandy Paws, an unlikely friendship blooms between them. But when they meet a gentlemanly lion in the park called Mr. Taking me back to my own childhood favourites such as Mary Poppins and Peter Pan, with a dose of The Tiger Who Came To Tea mixed in, this 1920's novel, set in London, is an absolute delight.īen and Hattie are struggling to adjust to their new life in London. One of our favourite reads of 2023 so far, Dandy, The Highway Lion by Stephanie Sorrell, illustrated by Roxana de Rond and published by Chicken House is wonderfully old-fashioned storytelling. This is something I see in the women I work with in my practice all the time. They discuss the various social constructs that have lead to what they coined, “Human Giver Syndrome,” something that predominantly impacts women in our culture but certainly not exclusively, “At the heart of Human Giver Syndrome lies the deeply buried, unspoken assumption that women should give everything, every moment of their lives, every drop of energy, to the care of others.” She explains how this imbedded cultural assumption leads to perpetual feelings of guilt around self-care. So instead, let me offer you some wisdom from this book and suggest instead, that the wheel does not need reinventing, it needs a break! Emily co-authored this book with her sister and the two of them explore the various components of burnout which they define as a combination of emotional exhaustion, depletion of empathy and feelings of futility. For many of us, this is the last message we need. This time of year we will all be bombarded by messages telling us to reinvent the wheel of our lives in a multitude of ways. I can think of no better suggestion to kick off the New Year and new decade than this book! I know I am making two Emily Nagoski suggestions back to back but consider me an official fangirl! Tavia feels torn between the boy who mysteriously comes to her at night and the boy who has been by her side every step of the way. No one, that is, except for her best friend and longtime crush, Benson. Now, Tavia is on the run with no one to trust. But when Tavia discovers that the aunt and uncle who took her in after her parents' death may have actually been responsible for the plane crash that killed them- and that she may have been the true intended victim-she flees for the safety of Camden, Maine, where the boy she sees in her visions instructs her to go. Tavia immediately searches for answers, desperate to determine why she feels so drawn to a boy she hardly knows. When she starts to see strange visions of a boy she’s never spoken with in real life, she begins to suspect that there’s much about her past that she isn’t being told. Tavia Michaels is the sole survivor of the plane crash that killed her parents. Give it to fans of Beautiful Creatures and Nightshade. #1 New York Times bestselling author Aprilynne Pike has created a heart-stopping romance built on a love triangle like you’ve never seen before and filled with epic stakes and a centuries-long conspiracy. I loved the oral history format the author used for this book. It starts in the 80's and progresses up into 2011. There's a lot to learn in this book that was going on prior to Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Many don't realize that the movement emerged before these "big four."ĭeep Six was released in 1986 and this is where it all started, of course I didn't discover these bands until years later when they became huge and I was a little older. I think when many people hear the word "grunge" they instantly think of the four more popular 90's grunge bands including Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Nirvana and Soundgarden. So, when I recently discovered this book, I had to get it. Grunge was and very much still is a large part of my life. My teen years literally consisted of listening to music and playing in band. I'm going to admit right off the rip that I've been told I'm still living in the 90's. Jeraud (Jer), Michael's other son attempts to stop him with his girlfriend and his two best friends. He had an affair with Holly's aunt, Marie-Claire Anderson and was the one who killed her. Holly and her cousins discover that Michael and his son, Eli are behind this. Nicole is performing as Juliet in their school play and suddenly a fire starts. When Holly's aunt dies, they are left in the custody of her uncle, Richard. However, Nicole already knew a little about witchcraft due to her boyfriend, Eli. Bast (Holly's), Hecate (Nicole's), and Freya (Amanda's) become the three girls cat familiars. Holly belongs to the Cahor house and reveals this to Amanda. Eventually, Holly realizes she is a witch and that she carries the soul of Isabeau of the Cahors house. Bizarre incidents occur to Holly, such as strange visions and dreams. After her parents die, her aunt and uncle that she never knew of get custody of her. In Witch, Holly Cathers, the main character, is the lone survivor of the rafting trip her family took with her best friend, and later receives a small cat who is deaf, Bast. The five novels depict a family feud between a coven of witches called the Cahors and a coven of warlocks called the Deveraux. In 2009 the series was optioned by DreamWorks' Mark Sourian, with the intent to combine the first two books in the series into a single screenplay. The first book, Witch was released in 2002 through Simon Pulse. Wicked is a series of young adult novels written by American authors Nancy Holder and Debbie Viguié. Now Graphic Ink is a must have tome for any and all Darwyn Cooke fans. The Twilight Children was beautifully illustrated but I must admit I never really got the point of the story. I picked up the Batman “Ego and Other Tales” and “The Twilight Children” and a truly impressive hardcover called “Graphic Ink”.īatman “Ego” contained several stories from Gotham Nights, Solo, and Selina’s Big Score.Īvery good read with some differing styles showing a versatility in styles that I was unaware of. I basically discovered him relatively late in his career with the New Frontier and I was hooked! But there was quite a bit of material and I still have yet to get through it. After the very sad passing of Darwyn Cooke in May, I made it a bit of a mission to get more familiar with his earlier work. |
