Survivalists (colloquially referred to as preppers) as a concept fascinate me the same way cults to. Moving into his Brooklyn brownstone to live along with his Hurricane Sandy-traumatized, illegal-gun-stockpiling, optimized-soy-protein-eating, bunker-building roommates, Aretha finds that her dreams of making partner are slipping away, replaced by an underground world, one of selling guns and training for a doomsday that’s maybe just around the corner.įor readers of Victor LaValle’s The Changeling, Paul Beatty’s The Sellout, and Zakiya Harris’s The Other Black Girl, The Survivalists is a darkly humorous novel from a smart and relevant new literary voice that’s packed with tension, curiosity and wit, and unafraid to ask the questions most relevant to a new generation of Americans: Does it make sense to climb the corporate ladder? What exactly are the politics of gun ownership? And in a world where it’s nearly impossible for young people to earn enough money to afford stable housing, what does it take in order to survive? In the wake of her parents’ death, Aretha, a habitually single Black lawyer, has had only one obsession in life-success-until she falls for Aaron, a coffee entrepreneur. A single Black lawyer puts her career and personal moral code at risk when she moves in with her coffee entrepreneur boyfriend and his doomsday-prepping roommates in a novel that’s packed with tension, curiosity, humor, and wit from a writer with serious comedy credentials. ![]()

While I had been wavering on my investment in the series, this volume pulls everything together. The King’s Beast Volume 7 is a turning point for the series. But Boku’s confession about what he saw the night Sogetsu sent Rangetsu spiraling. While the secrets began to emerge slowly in the last volume, The King’s Beast Volume 7 is all about the truth about Sogestu’s supposed murder, Kougai, and his beast servant, Boku, and the power that has laid dormant inside of Rangetsu. In addition, to Kougai’s attack, which confirmed his suspicion, Rangetsu was forced to forge an uneasy truce. The King’s Beast Volume 6 is published and localized in English by VIZ Media, translated & adapted by JN Productions, and features touch-up & lettering by Monaliza De Asis. ![]() ![]() The series is created, written, and illustrated by Rei Toma based in their existing world from the Dawn of Arcana. Luckily she was able to fight off the effects of the potion, and in The King’s Beast Volume 7, we find out why she was able to do so. Last volume, Kougai attacked Rangetsu, making her ingest an aphrodisiac. Having been promoted as a romantic thriller circling a revenge plot, Volume 6 left a sour taste in my mouth with its use of sexual assault. For the last five volumes, I’ve been pretty frustrated with the lack of romance in The King’s Beast. ![]() ![]() Though just how Eli became a vampire is not fully revealed, there is some more insight into her background and how she became the androgynous being that she is today. The reader can almost feel the horrible pain and confusion that she goes through during her transformation.Ī few things that are unclear in the film are more deeply explored in the novel. Some of the more disturbing parts of the book are those involving Virginia, after Eli has bitten her. When she enters a place she was not invited, blood comes out of every pore in her body. While feeding or attacking, Eli can not only produce claws from her hands and feet, but also wings that actually allow her to fly. What Lindqvist adds are some of the physical differences having to do with Eli’s “infection,” as it is called. The drinking of blood to stay strong, the danger of the sun, and the requirement to be invited in are all there. Like any good storyteller, Lindqvist makes his own adaptations to the vampire lore while still retaining those classic elements that most people know. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Okay, not a drop of it, but if she could keep pace long enough to get her balance, she could relax the death grip of just one of her hands and smack-press, she meant press-the electronic panel of buttons on this very-very-expensive piece of leased equipment. ![]() “Oh crap!” She grabbed the padded side bars, an instinctive move purely intended to keep from face-planting on high-speed rubber, with little actual athleticism involved. “Ooof!” The belt started moving under her feet.
